What is Flock Safety?
Flock Safety cameras are automated license plate reader cameras installed around Kalamazoo Country. They photograph and log every car that drives past, creating a searchable database of where people go and when. This data is collected, stored and accessed without warrants, consent, or meaningful public oversight.
Why are they dangerous?
These cameras don’t just affect “criminals.” They surveil everyone. The data is stored by a private tech company and can be accessed by police and shared with federal agencies like ICE. Across the country, this technology has already been used to track undocumented people and to investigate legal activity like abortion care. Once this data exists, it can be misused, sold, abused, or weaponized. It makes our community less safe, not more.
What are we fighting for?
The Get the Flock Out of Kzoo campaign is demanding:
- The complete removal of all Flock cameras in Kalamazoo
- A full, public audit of all data-sharing with police and federal agencies
- Reinvestment of the money into real community safety like housing, health care, and education
We believe real safety comes from trust, transparency, and investing in people—not mass surveillance.
