Earlier this week, presidential candidate Kamala Harris visited Kalamazoo on a campaign stop. During her speech, SWMI DSA member Sean D. interrupted her in protest of her stance on the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Here’s why he did it:
My name is Sean Duross and I am the social media coordinator for the Southwest Michigan chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. On October 26, 2024, I disrupted a Kamala Harris campaign event in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
I interrupted her speech by yelling “No More Gaza War” and demanding “Have You No Decency” until I was removed by Secret Service.
I raised my voice because I could no longer remain silent in the face of the atrocities being committed daily by my government in my name. As a US Marine veteran with service overseas in both Ukraine and Iraq, I know the difference between valid self-defense, and a campaign of ethnic cleansing.
In responding to my protest, Vice President Harris said ‘We must end that war.’
We must end that war? Isn’t it Israel’s war?
Words matter. She had no intention to mention Gaza in her script. Her response was off the cuff and telling, as these responses often are. She just told everyone, it’s OUR war – yours, mine, our tax dollars blowing up those kids. She reveals that’s how she sees it – OUR WAR. That is why I raised my voice.
